The Department of PaleoServices at the San Diego Natural History Museum is seeking a passionate mission supporting part-time Assistant Report Writer.

The San Diego Natural History Museum is run and operated by the San Diego Society of Natural History, a private not-for-profit scientific organization incorporated in 1874. The Museum’s mission is to interpret the natural world through research, education and exhibits; to promote understanding of the evolution and diversity of southern California and the peninsula of Baja California; and to inspire in all a respect for nature and the environment. Within the Museum, the Biodiversity Research Center of the Californias (BRCC) encompasses all scientific research, collections, and resource management activities.

About PaleoServices:

Within BRCC, the Department of PaleoServices specializes in working with external clients to fulfill their needs in paleontological resource management. The focus of PaleoServices is on the recognition, recovery, and preservation of the significant and unique paleontological resources (fossils) that provide critical direct evidence of the rich biological and geological history the greater southern California region. This position is responsible for assisting the PaleoServices Report Writer and GIS Specialist in producing paleontological records search summaries, paleontological assessment technical reports, paleontological resource mitigation plans, and paleontological mitigation final reports. Reports directly to the PaleoServices Report Writer and GIS Specialist.

Major Responsibilities: 

Conduct in-house paleontological records searches and/or request external institutional records searches.

Assist in compiling project details, in analyzing project components, and in developing appropriate pre-construction, during-construction, and post-construction mitigation measures for the production of paleontological assessment technical reports and paleontological mitigation plans.

Draft/produce report figures including geological maps, paleontological potential maps, and field survey photo-figures.

Assist in compiling project descriptions, in organizing field and laboratory data, in summarizing project stratigraphy and paleontological results for the production of final paleontological mitigation reports.

Take specimen photos and produce photo figures and graphic illustrations for various reports.

Compile stratigraphic, geologic, field collection, and paleontological data into formal collection locality descriptions and enter results into the paleontological collection database.

Meet report deadlines and help ensure that all other aspects of the mitigation program (e.g., fossil preparation, fossil curation) are on track to be completed in accordance with the report deadline.

Qualifications:

B.S. Degree in Geology, Paleobiology, or related fields

Ability to exercise independent discretion and judgement in the application of learned scientific knowledge and skills

Superior oral and written communication skills, and organizational skills

Ability to analyze project documents such as grading/shoring plans, geotechnical reports using science-based judgement

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator; some experience with GIS desktop software preferred (e.g., Esri’s ArcGIS Pro or ArcMap)

Proficient in skills and techniques employed in geological and paleontological fieldwork, including geological mapping, measuring of stratigraphic sections, lithologic descriptions, paleontological collection techniques, and use of field equipment

General knowledge of California geology and paleontology

General knowledge of the scientific disciplines of geology and paleontology

Banquet Bartender (Part - Time, Regular)

The San Diego Natural History Museum is seeking enthusiastic and friendly part - time, as needed, Banquet Bartender for special events. This position provides guests an unparalleled customer service experience.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable preparing drink orders for guests according to specified recipes using measuring systems. Issue, open, and serve wine/champagne bottles. Set up and maintain cleanliness and condition of bar, bar unit, tables, and other tools. Prepare fresh garnishes for drinks. Stock ice, glassware, and paper supplies. Transport supplies to bar set-up area. Wash soiled glassware. Remove soiled wares from bar top and tables and place in designated area. Anticipate and communicate replenishment needs. Process all payment methods. Count bank at end of shift, complete designated cashier reports, resolve any discrepancies, drop off receipts, and secure bank. Secure liquors, beers, wines, coolers, cabinets, and storage areas. Complete closing duties.

This position requires Saturday and Sunday availability. Holidays and some evenings are required. The San Diego Natural History Museum is open daily, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

Major Responsibilities:

Follow Museum and Department safety and security policies and procedures to ensure a clean, safe, and secure environment.

Develop and maintain positive and productive working relationships with other employees and departments.

Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period of time or for an entire work shift.

Paleontological Specialist (Part - Time, Temporary)

The Department of Paleontology at the San Diego Natural History Museum has an opening for paleontological field monitor. This position will be part-time temporary, as needed (0 – 29 hours per week). All work is funded through contracts.

Within the Museum, the Department of PaleoServices specializes in paleontological resource management. Our focus is on the recognition, recovery, and preservation of the significant and unique paleontological resources that occur in the greater southern California region.

Major Responsibilities:

Field monitoring of active mass grading, trenching, and other excavation activities into potentially fossil-bearing sedimentary rocks (Cenozoic and upper Mesozoic marine and/or non-marine rock units) in the greater southern California region.

Field monitor will work in close proximity to heavy equipment and be expected to work safely, to collect unearthed fossils, and to record relevant stratigraphic and taphonomic data.

Field monitoring can include working at distant locations for a week at a time, with commensurate reimbursement of per diem and mileage.

Opportunities for field survey work and fossil preparation are also possible.

Scheduled work hours are typically between the hours of 7 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday; however, work may also occur at night or on weekends.

Qualifications:

A minimum of a B.S. in Geology or a related discipline with an emphasis in paleontology.

Experience in field paleontology and stratigraphy is preferred.

Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs

Have a valid Driver’s License and a clean driving record.

Security Officer (Part-Time, Regular)

The San Diego Natural History Museum is seeking intuitive, reliable, attentive, detail-oriented individuals with strong communication and customer service skills as part-time/as-needed Security Officers. Security Officers are expected to uphold Museum rules and regulations by patrolling, observing, and reporting to the Facilities Supervisor and Senior Director of Operations. Security Officers are also expected to set the example for Museum safety and stellar customer service, and assist Museum guests, employees, and vendors during emergency situations.

Areas of responsibilities include:

Patrol, observe, and report to Facilities Supervisor and Senior Director of Operations.

Provide a high level of customer service and assistance to all Museum guests, staff, volunteers, and vendors.

Maintain a strong working knowledge of Museum policies and procedures, enforcing them with guests, staff, volunteers, and vendors as needed.

Document daily actions and situations in a Daily Log.

Respond to complaints and/or requests for assistance and evaluate appropriate course of action.

Respond to emergency situations within and directly outside Museum (i.e. natural disasters, medical emergencies, etc.)

Assist with building access and receiving/deliveries.

Perform other duties assigned by Facilities Supervisor and Senior Director of Operations.

Qualifications:

Previous security experience at a cultural institution is preferred

Excellent customer service skills with the ability to maintain a professional and calm demeanor in a challenging, dynamic environment with all types of guests, staff, volunteers, and vendors.

Strong communication skills with attention to detail.

Must be able stand for long periods of time, respond quickly and communicate verbally for the majority of each shift.

Ability to perform crowd control by providing clear guidance and direction

Current Guard Card certification through BSIS

Current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification

Youth Volunteer Liaison (Part - Time, Seasonal)

The Youth Volunteer Liaison is responsible for coordination and management of our summer camp aides during our Nat summer camp season (July & August). This position selects, onboards, trains, mentors, and celebrates and recognizes our high-school age volunteers.

This position is also responsible for the administrative processes that are required to support these volunteers. The person in this role is instrumental to the summer camp team. This position requires exemplary interpersonal skills and strong organizational and time management skills.  

Essential Functions:  

Recruitment, onboarding, management and supervision of summer camp volunteers. 

Successfully recruits youth volunteers to participate in our summer camp program. 

Conducts all initial correspondence by email and phone with prospective volunteer/intern applicants; maintains active communication with applicants through the entire onboarding process.

Schedules all prospective applicants for interviews and trainings.  

Conducts interviews with all applicants and determines eligibility for participation in the volunteer program. 

Develops and maintains the volunteer schedule to insure full coverage for all camps.

 Works closely with the Education Department to evaluate and coach volunteers.

Insure camps run smoothly and assist in camp activities and field trips. Also supervises campers during lunch break.

Performs administrative tasks associated with volunteers; maintain electronic and paper files, maintain volunteer records in database, monitor time keeping.

Evaluation of volunteers   

Participate and assist in Level Up School Program during the month of June.

Assists Director of Volunteers on special projects as needed.

Other Duties as assigned.

Knowledge and skills:  

Highly organized and detail oriented with strong administrative skills. 

Professional manner and ability to maintain confidentiality.  

Must embrace organizational values of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility.

Must be able to successfully interact with a very broad range of individuals of varying ages, ethnicities, interests, experiences, socio-economic backgrounds, abilities, etc.  

Skilled in MS Word, MS PowerPoint, Windows and Excel.  

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Knowledge of Volgistics or other comparable database programs is a plus.  

Qualifications:  

Administrative experience with volunteer programming strongly desired.  

Prior volunteer or intern experience is desired.  

Experience working successfully with high school and college aged students.

Previous experience working with children.

Bachelor's or Associate's degree desired.

Background check required. 

Will be required to complete “mandated reporter” training.
